The protagonist who doesn’t like reality TV, but he ends up as a contestant on a reality TV show and learns to fall in love. A hyper-intellectual, which makes him vulnerable. Has comic chops. Mezzo or soprano pop/rock belt.

CHRISTIAN: Male-identifying, mid 20s – early 30s. CHRISTIAN, a reality TV show contestant, is sweet, earnest, and religious, but not totally naïve. Needs a manly, virile quality. He’s a virgin by choice—not by default—and it has required great determination. Pop/rock tenor.

SEEKING:

Marie: (Female Identifying, 18, Black Senegalese) Has lived almost her whole life in America. Jaja’s daughter who runs the shop for her mother. Does a great job. Kind and smart. Academically successful, but her immigration status is in the way of her college dreams. Carrying a lot of weight on her young shoulders pretty gracefully.

Sista Bea: (Female Identifying, 30s, Black Ghanaian) Has been at the shop the longest and values her seniority. Constantly gossiping with Aminata. Has a great sense of humor, but you don’t want to cross her. Critical and unpredictable, she creates a lot of drama. But when push comes to shove, she’ll come through.

Aminata: (Female Identifying, 30s, Black Senegalese) Does a good job but takes all day. BEA’s best friend in gossip and drama - she doesn’t create it, but she doesn’t diffuse it either. Dryly funny, has mastered the art of side-eye.

Ndidi: (Female Identifying, 20s, Black Nigerian) The young spitfire. She dresses the youngest and braids the fastest. Everyone at the shop knows that she makes the most money, and it doesn’t always go over well - especially with Bea, who accuses her of stealing clients.

Miriam: (Female Identifying, 30s, Black Sierra Leonean) Quiet and kind. She has a five-year-old daughter back in Sierra Leone, who she is trying to bring to America. Her peaceful demeanor belies a rebellious streak, which has landed her in this life - very different than the one she was raised for.

Jaja: (Female Identifying, 40s Black Senegalese) Owner of the shop. Getting married today in City Hall to Steven - the landlord of a local building. Warm, joyful. Has a presence that draws you in.

Jennifer: (Female Identifying, 20s, Black American) Comes to the shop for micro braids and is in there all day. Patient, and an enthusiastic audience to the stories and dramas of the women in the shop.

Chrissy/Michelle/LaNiece: Chrissy: (Female Identifying, 30s, Black American) Very particular about her hair and adamant that they “make her look like Beyonce.” Michelle: (Female Identifying, 20s, Black American) The nervous client who doesn’t want trouble or confrontation and just wants to get her hair done peacefully. A former client of Bea’s who has come to have her hair done by Ndidi, without realizing they’re in the same shop. LaNiece: (Female Identifying, 30s, Black American) A really messy eater.

Vanessa/Radia/Sheila: Vanessa: (Female Identifying, 30s, Black American) A super-rude customer who no one wants to deal with. Radia: (Female Identifying, 18ish, Black American) One of Marie’s former classmates whose “just catching up” conversation highlights the differences between the opportunities available to them. Sheila: (Female Identifying, 30s, Black American) A friendly but loud talking and nosey customer. Constantly on her phone.

James/Franklin, The Sock Man/Olu, The Jewelry Man/Eric, the DVD Man: James: (Male Identifying, 30s, Black Ghanian) Aminata’s on and off again husband who clearly takes advantage of her. Charming, of course. Franklin, The Sock Man & Olu, The Jewelry Man: (Male Identifying, 30s, Black West African) Honest men just trying to make a living; well-known to the women who work in the shop. Eric, the DVD Man: (Male Identifying, 30s, Black West African) The caring DVD man who looks out for his friends; brings them critical news.

SEEKING:

SUZY (Offer out) (Female Identifying, 12, any ethnicity) Suzy is seen currently in the seventh grade, though also in flashbacks at a slightly younger age (late 10 and 11). High IQ, though her EQ is still very much a work in progress. Socially awkward, filled with huge emotions (sorrow, rage, loneliness, hurt) that she can neither name nor control. Determined. Curious to the point of obsession. In most of the present-day scenes she does not talk at all, though there will be moments when she cannot stop talking, even as she desperately wishes she could just keep her mouth shut.

FRANNY (Female Identifying, 11, any ethnicity). Seen mostly in flashbacks to age 11. Suzy's best/only friend through elementary school, but very different from Suzy. Desperately shy through her elementary years, with a lot of anxieties and fears, she was comfortable only with Suzy. But by middle school, when we meet her, she longs to step into a new version of herself. She yearns to be part of a larger friend group, to attend dances, and experience first-love. As she pulls away from Suzy, she tries to be kind, but she also feels stifled by this intense one-on-one friendship.

AUBREY (Female Identifying, 13, any ethnicity) Smart, confident, and maybe (definitely) a little bossy. When it comes to trends and what it means to be ‘grown-up’, Aubrey is ahead of the curve. An arbiter of all things cool, and a master of the middle school social scene. As they get older, Franny and Aubrey begin a budding friendship, connecting on style, boys, and all of the best girlhood things. Despite her social prowess, Aubrey can not seem to make heads or tails of Suzy’s awkwardness, and doesn’t quite care to.

JUSTIN (Male Identifying, 12, any ethnicity) A sweet mess of a kid. Diagnosed ADHD and not afraid to talk about it (as if anyone could miss it!). He’s the kind of kid who doesn’t notice that he puts on his T shirt inside out, and who might work hard on homework assignments then forget to turn them in. If you opened his backpack, you might find buried at the bottom, that cheese sandwich that he lost last week.

DYLAN (Male Identifying, 12, any ethnicity) Cute and confident, Dylan is the kind of kid who finds creativity in destruction. He’s a daredevil sometimes to the point of being dangerous and is always pushing the boundaries. Dylan is charismatic and funny, but he can also be cruel. Suzy finds him at best off-putting and at worst terrifying, and though we can definitely see her point, we can also see how he makes the other girls swoon.

MEG (Female Identifying, 40s, any ethnicity). Suzy’s mother. A real estate agent, which is probably not what she expected to be doing at this point in her life. A little harried: her house is messy, and she’s the kind of person who’s always running a little bit late. Wears all her feelings on her outside. Wants urgently to be there for her beloved, odd duck of a child, but is bewildered about how to help. Recently divorced from Suzy’s dad Jim, and still has lingering feelings about it all.

JIM (Male Identifying, 40s, any ethnicity). Suzy’s dad. A systems guy, meticulous. Likes order, planning; he’s the kind of person who takes pride in how he packs a car. Doesn’t love single parenting, and as a result he doesn’t always provide Suzy with the best environment on her nights at his place. A lot of take out, tv, etc. Like Meg, he’s baffled by Suzy, and by her silence, but he, too, will do anything for her. Thinking about the divorce, what went wrong, only sends him backwards, when he needs to be moving forwards, so he doesn’t linger there.

JAMIE (Male Identifying, 50s-60s, any ethnicity), based in Australia and speaks with an Australian accent. A charismatic, passionate biologist. Larger than life. He can deliver a TED talk, go on TV, jump fearlessly into jellyfish-infested waters, grab a deadly box jellyfish without batting an eye. For Jamie, life is the ultimate adventure. He’s deeply charming and also oddly intuitive – it's a little magical, at times. His relationship with Suzy works because he treats her like a peer, not like a kid.

ADULT AUTHORITY FIGURES (Franny’s Mom/Mrs. Turton/Dr. Legler/Wallace/Naomi/Angela/Ticket Agent. Female Identifying, 40s-50s, any ethnicity) Multiple adult tracks including Franny's mom, Suzy's science teacher Mrs. Turton, Suzy's therapist and many other real and imagined figures in Suzy's life. Strong comedic sensibilities and lands the more tender moments in the play. Switches between roles nimbly throughout the show.
