AUDITIONS FOR 9 TO 5: THE MUSICAL TO BE HELD IN SIMI VALLEY
Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center is proud to announce auditions for the Ventura County Premiere of 9 to 5, The Musical on Monday and Thursday, July 7th and 10th from 7 – 9 pm at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, 3050 Los Angeles Avenue, Simi Valley, CA 93065 and on Wednesday, July 9th from 6 – 10 pm at Madilyn Clark Studios, 10852 Burbank Blvd, North Hollywood, CA 91601. Auditions are by appointment but walk ups are welcomed. Performances for 9 to 5: The Musical are September 20 – October 26, with curtain at 8 pm on Friday andSaturday and 2 pm on Sunday.
This fun, new, light-hearted musical brings the original 1979 movie to life on the stage, featuring a brand-new score by seven-time Grammy Award® winner DOLLY PARTON that includes the blockbuster title song, plus a book by original screenwriter PATRICIA RESNICK. SVCAC’s production will be produced and directed by FRED HELSEL, with musical direction by GARY POIROT and choreography by BECKY CASTELLS.
Franklin Hart is an egotistical, sexist, womanizing boss who makes the workplace a living hell for his female employees. In a hilarious turn of events, three of his “victims” live out their wildest fantasy - giving their boss the boot! Violet, Judy and Doralee find themselves inadvertently holding their domineering and lecherous boss captive. While Hart remains otherwise engaged, the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. All goes swimmingly until he manages to escape. But just when it seems they have failed, fate steps in.
For auditions, please prepare 32 bars of a song from or in the style of the show. Accompanist provided. Arrive early to fill out your audition form and bring with you a current resume, headshot, and a complete listing of conflicts from July 28 through Oct. 26, 2014. Invited callbacks will be July 15 (7-11 p.m.) at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center. Dance/movement will take place at invited callbacks. For the callbacks, wear clothing that shows off your body and shoes you can move in. No flip-flops or sandals. Women, bring character shoes. This is a non-union, non-paid production.
Needed are 4 principle women, 2 principle men, 1 teenage boy, 1 male age 50-70, and a chorus of 6 men and 6 women who also double in featured roles. All ethnicities welcome.
SVCAC is also accepting resumes for Stage Manager, Lighting Designer and stage technicians.
Violet Newstead: (Lead) Female, 35-50. The company’s Head Secretary and Mr. Hart’s Administrative Assistant, she is smart and efficient, a working mom who stands up for what she believes in (played by Lily Tomlin in original film); vocal range: alto.
Doralee Rhodes: (Lead) Female, 25 – 35. Spirited country gal, warm and personable, don’t underestimate her Barbie-doll appearance (played by Dolly Parton in original film); vocal range: soprano, high belt.
Judy Bernly: (Lead) Female, 30 – 40. A bit meek and quite proper, she’s the new girl, a little insecure but determined and hopeful; has been burned by her husband's affair (played by Jane Fonda in original film); vocal range: soprano, high belt.
Franklin Hart, Jr.: (Lead) Male, 40-60. The President of Consolidated Industries, this egotistical womanizer is about to meet his match in the women he has hired; the notorious boss, smarmy, pompous, his own biggest fan, can fool you with his temporary charm but soon shows his arrogant, self-absorbed attitude (played by Dabney Coleman in original film); vocal range: lyric baritone.
Roz Keith: (Lead) Female, 25-60. Company snitch and Mr. Hart’s personal assistant and idolizer, she’ll do whatever is necessary to protect the man she “stalks”--uh, loves; alto.
Joe: (Lead) Male, 25 – 35. Cute, young, office accountant, smitten with Violet; helps her realize it’s okay to open her heart to love; vocal range: tenor/high baritone.
Dwayne: (Chorus / Ensemble) Male, 25-35. Husband to Doralee, handsome, he is supportive of Doralee’s professional pursuits.
Josh: (Chorus / Ensemble) Male, 15-19. Violet’s teenage son, a little awkward for his age.
Missy: (Chorus / Ensemble) Female, 18-35. Fluttery and ditzy, a bit clueless.
Maria Delgado: (Chorus / Ensemble) Female, 18-25. Young and vibrant.
Dick: (Chorus / Ensemble) Male, 30-50. Judy’s ex-husband, average guy, a little less hair and a little more paunch than he had ten years ago.
Kathy: (Chorus / Ensemble) Female, 18-35. The office gossip, nosy, busybody.
Tinsworthy: (Chorus / Ensemble) Male 50 – 70. The older owner of Consolidated Industries who’s surprised and pleased by some of the changes taking place in his business.
Ensemble: (Chorus / Ensemble) male & female singer/dancers, 18-45, to play multiple character roles, must move well.
