Please prepare EITHER 2 monologues OR a monologue and 16 bars of a song for a total of no more than 3 minutes. Please bring your sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. Also, please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

Amalia Balash – late 20s/early 30s. A woman who is secretly in love with her “rival” co-worker, Georg. Amalia is warm, funny, shy, and a bit eccentric. There’s a quiet confidence about her. Amalia is an outsider, both to the city and as the newest addition to Maraczek’s perfume shop. She’s looking for love and connection but feels uncertain she’ll ever find it. Amalia is self-reliant; she’s a woman who had to take care of herself from a young age. Her mother and father are no longer with us. Classic lyric soprano with a solid high B.
Georg Nowack –CAST
Illona Ritter – late 30s/early 40s. A woman who is a salesclerk at Maraczek’s perfume shop. Illona is often misunderstood by her friends, family, and the men she dates. She is having a love affair with Stephen Kodaly who does not hold the relationship with care in any meaningful way. She knows she deserves better but can’t seem to get out of her own way. She’s on a quest to find her self-compassion, and ultimately, her self-love. She’s impatient, impulsive, and despite the setbacks, has a heart of gold, making her moments of heartache that much more heart-breaking. Things have not been easy for Illona but she remains resilient. She has a deep love for her chosen family at Maraczek’s. Brassy belt with a high mix.
Stephen Kodaly/Headwaiter – late 30s/early 40s. A man who is a salesclerk at Maraczek’s perfume shop. People call Stephen by his last name, “Kodaly” which tells a story in and of itself. He moves through the world using his charisma to get what he wants and can see people for who and what they are. And while Kodaly is self-involved and manipulative, he brings joy to the shop and he too is looking for connection, albeit through the wrong channels. Kodaly is a man always searching. Pure musical theater tenor.
Zolton Maraczek – late 50s/early 60s. (Black) The owner of the perfume shop, handed down from his father and grandfather. Maraczek is tender man who has lost his connection to his wife. The employees of his shop are his beloved chosen family, even if he gives them grief about their job performance often. He’s unsettled, always looking to improve the experience for his customers and increase sales. He’s tenacious, stubborn, generous, and is trying to find the silver linings of his mundane life as he ages. Though he’s surrounded by people all day long, including the men and women he employs, there’s a deep loneliness that hovers over his life. He sees a great deal of himself in Georg. Baritone.
Ladislov Sipos/Detective/Ensemble – 40s. A salesclerk at Maraczek’s perfume shop. Sipos has always been a man who observes, and participates in, life from the “outside.” He’s wise beyond his years and has become the repository for everyone’s secrets. Though he’s cowardly and afraid, he loves his family, his children, and friends. He’s clever, quiet, and grounded. Baritone.
Arpad Laszlo/Busboy/Ensemble – 18 to 25. (Black/Latine) Arpad wants to be treated like a grown man and taken seriously. Incredibly bright, self-sufficient, and caring. Has no family in the city. Dances well.
Featured Customer/Ensemble – a woman in her late 40s/early 50s. Must move and sing well. Strong mezzo OR soprano.

ALEX, mid to late 2's. Nuyorican. A comic book artist with a vivid imagination from Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Introverted. Socially awkward. And suffering. From writer’s block. Has taken to dressing as a superhero of his own creation to find his mojo again.
JOE, early to mid 30s. Nuyorican. Alex's older brother. Chameleon. Survivor. Fancies himself “Man of the house.” Works at a marketing startup. Adept at peddling B.S. to all, especially himself.
PATRICIA, mid to late 50s. Puerto Rican. Joe and Alex's mother. A widow. Still trying to get her children to make good choices. Even after all these years.
YESICA, mid to late 20s. Dominican/Colombian. A photographer and artist from Sunset Park. Fights the changing of her neighborhood from behind her camera lens. Battles solo, but secretly longs to be a part of a team. Looking for something big to change the game.
EL CHUPACABRA, ageless. A super vain supervillain. A nasty nemesis. El Coquí's archenemy. And the manifestation of Alex's crippling anxieties.
JUNIOR, mid to late 20s. Nuyorican. Alex’s former school bully. Now a cocky, local rapper with more attitude than talent who’s still willing to throw punches. Verbal ones. Doubles with El Chupacabra.
