“Leonidas Lipovetsky program should be brilliant!  A wonderful way to inaugurate the 2010 Shigeru Piano Series”, said artistic director Mary Ann Scialdo. This is the first of four planned concerts in the 2010 Shigeru Piano Series, an annual concert series dedicated to the celebration of the center’s Shigeru Kawai Grand piano. The instrument that resides at the Center was handcrafted in Japan by a unique brand of craftsmen called Master Piano Artisans. This is one of few in the country and has been featured in programs with pianists Mary Ann Scialdo, Franz Mantini and Nancy Rubenstein.

Leonidas Lipovetsky was born in Montevideo, Uruguay where he began his music studies at age four. Following his first public professional recital at twelve, he continued his piano studies with Wilhelm Kolischer. The winner of many first prizes in musical competitions such as the First Place winner of the National Competitions in 1958 and 1960 organized by the National State Theatre and the National Symphony Orchestra (OSSODRE), As a student at the Juilliard School in New York in the 1960s, he studied under legendary Russian pedagogue Rosina Lhevinne. He received a B.M. and a M.S. from the Juilliard School of Music, where he was the first recipient of the Van Cliburn Scholarship. A grant from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund for Music, Inc launched his first European Concert tour during which he performed in eight of the major capitals. He has since toured numerous times in the United States, Canada, Europe, Russia, Central and South America and the People’s Republic of China. His award-winning Educational PROJECT “MUSIC & THE ARTS” has been successfully presented in Systems of Education, Colleges, Universities and Museums of Art in the US and abroad. His reputation as an Artist-Teacher has earned him invitations to give Master classes at the Moscow Conservatory, at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, at the Trinity school of Music in London and at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music in the People’s Republic of China

At present, he is retired from a 35-year career teaching piano at Florida State University. A few years ago, he and his wife Astrid, moved from Tallahassee to the Tampa Bay area.
The Carollwood Cultural Center is located at 4537 Lowell Road, Tampa, FL 33618.  For more information, call (813)269-1310.

The Carrollwood Cultural Center is a partnership between Hillsborough County and the Friends of the Carrollwood Cultural Center. It is the first cultural center in the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department system and opened in March 2008. The building is a complete renovation of the old St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and a new addition that provides more than 22,000 square feet of space for the arts.

The mission of the Friends of the Center is to offer cultural programs, services and events that encourage individual exploration and promotes a sense of community. The Center participates with several Florida interest groups to promote the arts and its influences throughout the community. These groups offer intergenerational programs as well as initiatives that address particular individual needs and encompass graphic and performing arts, continuing education, and community outreach programs.
